Mastectomy
According to the National Cancer Institute, a preventative mastectomy can reduce a woman's breast cancer risk by 95%.
For women who have a family history of breast cancer, the procedure can reduce their cancer risk by 90%.
A Mastectomy Can Treat Breast Cancer Or Even Prevent It
Mastectomies are one of the possible treatments you may pursue after a breast cancer diagnosis. The procedure can remove the cancerous tissue, allowing you to live a happy and healthy life.
A mastectomy can also be a proactive measure. If you or a loved one is at risk for breast cancer, you can dramatically decrease the chances of a diagnosis with a preventative or radical mastectomy. It can also help you avoid the taxing symptoms of cancer, as well as the side effects of treatments like radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

A Patient Shares Their Gratitude Towards Dr. Tandon
"The journey of knowing DrTandon over the last few years brings me to tears...[My mother's] oncology surgeon recommended Dr. Tandon and assured us he was “who he would send his own mom to.” Meeting Dr. Tandon immediately became my mom’s safe place. His demeanor and gentle spirit was exactly what she needed...Naturally, when I underwent my breast reduction earlier this year, there was no question who I chose...Dr. Tandon, with all the uncertainty, panic, and fear that we’ve faced on this long road, thank you for being a safe place for us. You will always be a blessing to my family." Kristy Mascaro
Prophylactic Mastectomy
Also referred to as preventative mastectomy, a prophylactic mastectomy is performed before breast cancer is even diagnosed. The procedure is recommended for women who have a high risk of developing breast cancer later in life. One breast or both breasts may be removed during this preventative procedure.
Who Should Consider Preventative Mastectomy
Prophylactic mastectomies are recommended for women who:
- Have more than one close relative with breast cancer
- Have tested positive for BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, CDH1, PTEN, or TP53 gene mutations
- Have undergone radiation therapy on their chest before turning 30
- Have widespread breast microcalcifications
- Have already had breast cancer in one breast

View On GoogleA frightening diagnosis of Breast Cancer was my first visit with Dr. Tandon. His consult was extremely thorough, unhurried and his compassion - obvious. Little did I know, at that first visit, that I was seated across from the surgeon who would make the most difficult time of my life much more than manageable. Dr. Ravi Tandon is highly skilled and his training extensive. His Nipple Sparing Bilat Reconstruction, in my case, far exceeded even my own expectations, as it is now impossible to tell that there was breast surgery...

Whether you've undergone a total mastectomy or a skin-sparing mastectomy, there are reconstructive procedures that can restore the appearance of the entire breast. These procedures can be done at the same time as the mastectomy, soon after the mastectomy, or well after the surgery is performed. The timing of your breast reconstruction will depend on your health and preferences.
Dr. Tandon Helped Pass Louisiana's
Breast Reconstruction Law

Dr. Tandon knows how important breast reconstruction can be in a patient's life. That's why he helped advocate for the Carter Stokes Oral and Written Summary of Breast Cancer Treatment Alternatives and Access to Breast Reconstruction Surgery Information Law. Signed in 2018, this state statute requires general hospitals to provide reconstructive surgery information after a patient has undergone a mastectomy, lymph node dissection, or lumpectomy.

Can My Mastectomy Be Covered By Insurance?
The financial aspect of a mastectomy can also be a burden, especially if you are considering breast reconstruction surgery.
Fortunately, thanks to the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA), your mastectomy and reconstruction should be covered by insurance if you have breast cancer.
During your consultation, Dr. Tandon and his New Orleans team can explain the costs and details.
How Long Will My Recovery Take?
You can typically expect your mastectomy recovery period to take about four to six weeks, though it may take a little longer. After that, you should be able to resume regular activities.
Keep in mind that the recovery timeline depends on the procedure and the extent of your treatment. Certain techniques, such as lymph node removal, may increase your healing period.
