Advanced Breast Reconstruction Techniques

Natural Breast Reconstruction
During a natural tissue breast reconstruction, Dr. Tandon will harvest tissue from another part of your body such as your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks to reconstruct a breast mound. By using your own tissue, Dr. Tandon can achieve the most natural-looking results with a minimized risk of complications. In some cases, he may also use fat grafting to gather excess fat through liposuction and transplant it to the breast for a more natural-looking shape. There are many techniques available, and our team will help you choose the best one for your goals.

Breast Reconstruction with Implants
If you prefer, you can also choose to restore size, symmetry, and shape to your breasts with implants. Breast reconstruction with implants can sometimes be performed at the same time as your mastectomy or over a two-stage process. To ensure the most aesthetic results and shortest possible recovery time, Dr. Tandon offers pre-pectoral placement. Our plastic surgeon can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of breast implants during your consultation at our practice serving New Orleans, LA.

Hybrid Breast Reconstruction
The best of both worlds, a hybrid reconstruction combines the look of natural breast reconstruction with the size and shape enhancement of breast implants. This breast reconstruction is perfect for women who want the natural look of a fat transfer but don't have enough excess tissue to reach their desired size. Dr. Tandon will perform a DIEP flap procedure to transfer excess tissue from your abdomen to your breasts before placing your implants. The results will leave you with larger, natural-looking, and more symmetrical breasts.

Delayed vs. Immediate
Breast Reconstruction
Although many women choose to undergo breast reconstruction at the same time or immediately after their mastectomy, other women can benefit from delayed reconstruction. Immediate reconstruction reduces the number of surgeries you need, so it can result in lower medical costs and reduced scarring. However, if you still need to undergo additional treatment, our plastic surgeon may recommend delaying your reconstruction until you are fully healthy.

Breast Asymmetry Surgery
If you underwent a mastectomy of one breast (unilateral mastectomy), you may be left with an asymmetrical bust. While most women have naturally asymmetrical breasts, differences in texture or aesthetics between your breasts can make you feel self-conscious. Dr. Tandon offers the most advanced techniques for the correction of asymmetrical breasts, including breast reduction, breast lift, breast augmentation, or fat grafting with liposuction. Whether you underwent reconstruction recently or not, Dr. Tandon can refine your results.

Nipple Reconstruction
If you did not undergo a nipple-sparing mastectomy, your breasts may feel incomplete following your reconstruction. Nipple reconstruction is a cosmetic surgery to restore a missing nipple, and it has many emotional and cosmetic benefits. Based on your cosmetic goals, Dr. Tandon will choose between the most advanced techniques including a skin flap, skin graft, nipple sharing, medical tattoo, or 3D areola tattoo. No matter which technique you choose, Dr. Tandon will personally design your surgery to produce highly aesthetic results.

Understanding Your Insurance Options
Whether you undergo breast reconstruction immediately after a mastectomy or years later, your procedure should be covered by your health insurance. The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA) requires group health plans that pay for a mastectomy to cover reconstructive surgery and any procedures you may need to restore the balance between the breasts. Our helpful office in Metairie can assist you through the process should you have questions.
