Methods of Breast Reconstruction
Our Metairie plastic surgery office serving Mandeville, New Orleans, and beyond proudly offers different surgical techniques to reconstruct breasts after breast cancer. Your options include:
Breast Implants
This two-part procedure first requires the placement of a tissue expander. The expander is gradually filled over the course of two to six months to prepare your body for an implant. In the second surgery, the expander is removed and a breast implant is placed. Like breast augmentation, the implants used in reconstruction will have to be replaced about every 10 years.
Perforator Flaps
A perforator flap uses a section of skin, fat, and blood vessels from another area of the body to create a new breast. Using your own tissue results in a breast that looks and feels natural. Dr. Tandon offers several types of perforator flap surgery and might recommend PAP flap, DIEP flap, and stacked DIEP flap.
“I felt supported and informed.” 5-Star Reviews for Our Team
In October 2023, I was diagnosed with invasive carcinoma, left breast… Dr Colfrey recommended mastectomy, and we opted for bilateral procedure. He referred me to Dr Tandon who performed the reconstruction. I simply don’t know the words to describe the very excellent care I received from both doctors. Dr Tandon and his staff were most reassuring that all would be well, and it was! I opted for breast implants which are very natural looking and have improved my shape immensely. Dr Tandon is not only a skilled and talented physician, he is a caring and supportive person whose calming manner meant everything.
View on GoogleDr Tandon is an exceptional surgeon with an incredible staff (Thank you Shannon!). I felt supported and informed for every step of my DIEP flap reconstruction. No matter what the circumstances are, the idea of surgery can be intimidating. Dr. Tandon's talents and skills as a surgeon coupled with his approachable and calm demeanor made the best out of an overwhelming situation. I'm really impressed with my results and sincerely grateful to he and his team!

Board Certification
Dr. Ravi Tandon is a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This credential requires plastic surgeons to pass rigorous exams and complete education and training that goes beyond what is expected for medical licensure. Dr. Tandon has trained in all areas of plastic surgery, from breast augmentation to facelifts, but he has a vested interest in helping women who are preparing for or who have completed a mastectomy.
Advanced Surgical Techniques
Dr. Tandon wants your surgery to yield the results you deserve, and he uses the latest techniques and technology in the field to accomplish this. Our team serving Mandeville can perform pre-pectoral implant placement for a faster recovery, liposuction for natural-looking breasts, and microsurgery for incredibly precise treatment and unparalleled results. In short, your surgery will be tailored to your goals.
A Commitment to Patients
Dr. Tandon was involved in the passing of a law that requires general hospitals to inform breast cancer patients of their reconstructive options following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or lymph node dissection. This law also mandates that patients are made aware of state and federal laws that assure coverage of the costs related to reconstructive surgery.
Breast Reconstruction Is Covered by Medical Insurance
The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 states that group health plans are required to pay for a mastectomy, breast reconstruction, and prostheses. Breast reconstruction is also covered under Medicare and, in some cases, Louisiana Medicaid. If you have out-of-pocket expenses related to your surgery, our New Orleans-area team will be more than happy to explore financing options with you.
Dr. Tandon Performs Microsurgery for Breast Resensation
While breast reconstruction can improve the shape of your breasts, it doesn't restore feeling to your chest. This can make hugs feel less fulfilling, hinder intimacy with your partner, and keep you from sensing temperature changes or injuries.
Dr. Ravi Tandon is one of the few surgeons in the world who offers the revolutionary Resensation® procedure to be performed during or after your breast reconstruction. During this procedure, allograft nerve tissue is used to connect the nerves in your chest with the nerves in your reconstructed tissue. This can help improve sensation in your breasts and nipples. While the sensation won't be as strong as it was before your mastectomy, you can regain some sensation that helps you lead a more fulfilling life.
Dr. Tandon completed a reconstructive microsurgery fellowship at New York University Medical Center and is affiliated with the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.
“I am so pleased with my results.” More Reviews for Our Team
I had a double mastectomy one year ago. Dr Tandon preformed a nipple sparing procedure with a nerve graft. I now have full sensation in both breast. I am so pleased with my results and would highly recommend Dr Tandon and this procedure to anyone!
